Canada is the world’s second largest country by total land area and occupies most of northern North America. It extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the West and Northward into the Arctic Ocean. Canada’s shares a border with the United States in the South and the Northwest and this is the longest border in the world.
Canada comprises of ten provinces and three territories and is grouped into the following regions: Western Canada, Central Canada, Atlantic Canada, and Northern Canada. Northern Canada comprises of the territories of Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. And Eastern Canada refers to Central Canada and Atlantic Canada.
In Canada, the Provinces have more autonomy than territories and are responsible for the healthcare, education and welfare. The Provinces put together collect more revenue than the federal government.
Equalization payments are made by the federal government to ensure that reasonably uniform standards of services and taxation are kept between the richer and poorer provinces. Canada is one of the richest nations in the world, with a very high per-captia income. It is also a member of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the G8.
Canada ranks higher than the United States on the Heritage Foundation’s index of Economic Freedom and also higher than most Western European countries.
Some of the largest foreign importers from Canada are the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan.
