Sometimes, images don’t work nearly quite as well as they’re supposed to. Look at the first image below and you will see that it doesn’t really speak as well as the second image does. While the first image is not only very common, it doesn’t communicate that well. And if you were to put this first image in your ideating campaign, it might not be able to create that much of an impact. Now look at the second image and you can see right away that it will definitely have a better impact.
And you don’t need to know Photoshop or any other image enhancing software. Plain old PowerPoint will do the trick and we’ll show you how! We will show you how to create the soft edges effect in PowerPoint and apply it to your own presentations and reports.

1. Insert an image of a bulb into a PowerPoint slide.
2. (a) Superimpose another image (we use an image with a question mark) on top of the bulb image.
(b) Resize so as to make the question mark fit within the size/image of the bulb.
3. Double click on the foreground image (the one with a question mark as you can see below) and a picture tools – Format ribbon will show.
4. Right click on the foreground image and choose Format Picture. On the Format Picture dialog box choose Glow and Soft Edges.
5. Adjust the size of the Soft Edges to 40 pt.
6. This is how it will eventually look. Let’s take a step further to make it more brighter. Right click on the foreground image and choose Format Picture. On the Format Picture dialog box choose Picture Corrections.
7. Adjust the Brightness to 10% and adjust the contrast to 70% and click Close.
