Japan is an archipelaga of more than 6800 islands in East Asia, located in the Pacific Ocean. Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku are the four largest islands and accounts for more than 97% of Japan’s land area. Japan is mountainous with many volcanoes with Mount Fuji, the highest peak in Japan, being a volcano.
Japan is heavily forested with more than 70% of the country being unsuitable for agricultural, industrial, or residential use. This is because of the generally steep elevations, climate and risk of landslides caused by earthquakes, soft ground and heavy rain. Thus there is a heavy concentration of the population in habitable zones located in coastal areas.
With a population of more than 128 million people, Japan has the world’s tenth-largest population. The Greater Tokyo Area is the largest metropolitan area in the world with over 30 million residents.
Japan has the world’s second-largest economy by nominal GDP and the third largest in purchasing power parity. It is also the world’s fourth largest exporter and fifth largest importer.
Japan is the only Asian country in the G8 and is also a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. Japan maintains a modern and extensive military force, employed in self-defense and peacekeeping. Japan has renounced the right to declare war and employs its military force in self-defense and peacekeeping.
Japan’s economy is highly developed and the country has very high living standards. Japan has the highest life expectancy of any country in the world (according to both the UN and WHO estimates) and the third lowest infant mortality rate.
